Health issues

A healthy reptile will have good muscle tone, be alert, and have clean skin. Look for white powdery flecks on their skin or tiny black dots under scales, especially belly scales, which would be an indication of mites. Eyes should be smoothly rounded, bright (cloudy when before shed) and of even shape and size. Sunken or swollen eyes (mites, other ailments), loose folded skin (dehydration, underweight), fluid/bubbles around the mouth (respiratory illness), and abrasions.

Inspect the lips and mouth for any signs of infection.

Signs of respiratory illness would include fluid and bubbles around the mouth, inability to breath evenly and with a clear passage. Snakes only have one lung which makes them more susceptible to respiratory infections.

Do not confuse the onset of a shed with health problems.

Review our section on health for more detail on various health issues.
